Fuengirola – A City of Progress
Fuengirola is a city of progress located approximately 33 km from Málaga. The city consists of both newer and older districts that are beautifully intertwined.
Fuengirola borders Benalmádena and Mijas and covers an area of around 10 km². It has a population of more than 80,000 permanent residents.
The city offers a wide variety of housing options, including villas, townhouses, apartments, and penthouses. It is possible to own a small holiday apartment overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, where you can stroll down in the morning and enjoy breakfast at a nearby café.
Fuengirola has a large and diverse selection of restaurants, and it is a pleasure to explore the many dining options along the coast. The city is also an excellent base, whether you need easy access to Málaga Airport or wish to explore other parts of the country, including coastal excursions or trips into the mountains.
Along the beach and around the harbour, you will find many popular restaurants specialising in traditional Spanish fish and seafood dishes. These are definitely worth a visit. The city itself also invites you to wander its streets, where you will discover many cosy and charming eateries.
Fuengirola is well equipped with excellent hospitals, doctors, chiropractors, and other healthcare services. You do not need to travel to other cities to receive quality medical care.
Everything you need is close at hand: good libraries, schools, post offices, and several interesting exhibitions. Part of the cultural life is organised by the city council, and on the following link you can find useful tips and a calendar of upcoming exhibitions:

Shopping opportunities in Fuengirola are plentiful. There are department stores, including a branch of El Corte Inglés, as well as many small specialty shops. When you live here, you quickly find your favourite local shops that meet your everyday needs.
The city also has traditional shopping centres that have been used by locals for generations. These markets are filled with small stalls offering fresh fish and vegetables for daily meals, along with butchers and spice vendors. The atmosphere is lively and authentic.
A small tip for everyday life: if there is a queue, you do not take a number. Instead, you ask who is last (“El último”), and then you know your place in line. When someone else arrives and asks the same question, you simply raise your hand to indicate that you are last. This system is also used in banks and other places where queues form.
One such place is Mercacentro Shopping Center:

Fuengirola is also home to the very popular Bioparc Fuengirola Zoo. The zoo is designed in a natural environment with large glass panels and beautiful enclosures for the animals. If you live in the city, it may be worth purchasing an annual pass, allowing you to visit whenever you like and enjoy both the animals and the relaxing atmosphere.

The current mayor of Fuengirola is committed to making the city more environmentally friendly, sustainable, and comfortable to live in. For the city council, any redevelopment project—regardless of size—is seen as an important improvement to residents’ quality of life.
As a result, sidewalks and roads throughout the city are being upgraded. Mayor Ana Mula set a goal for the city to reach 500,000 square metres of green space by 2023. As of 6 May 2020, Fuengirola had already planted more than 18,000 new trees and palm trees and was approaching this target.
The city’s urban ecology consultant, Antonio Carrasco, conducted an air quality study in connection with World Environment Day, which showed an improvement in air quality as a result of the extensive tree planting.
A great deal is being done to make Fuengirola a healthy and attractive place to live. All that remains is for you to decide where in the city you would like to live—then Fuengirola will likely welcome you with everything it has to offer.
